For Cornell computers which are self-supported, you may want Chemistry IT's optional assistance.We are here to help you set-up your computer, if you'd like. Here are the services we provide:

Choice A:

  • No services, please. I prefer to set up my own computer. Here is what I would like from Chemistry IT:

If it's a brand-new system, you get the factory install.

If Chemistry IT installs an OS, it is a "base", factory-like OS.

  • ChemIT's Windows OS install requires it check-in with Cornell's license server at least every 6 months.

  • Yes, please do some set-up for the computer I will self-support. Here is what I would like from Chemistry IT:

  Can only be done by ChemIT. Either Windows or Mac.

ChemIT's install requires software to check-in with Cornell's license server at least every 6 months.

User can instead install software using one of their 5 allocations via their Cornell MS O365 account.

Drivers and configuration for group printers  

User can do. Chemistry IT's documentation:

Adobe Acrobat, full  

User can do instead, since it's a Cornell-owned computer. However, there are hoops for user to get a Cornell-funded license.

Adobe Creative Suite CS  

User can do instead, since it's a Cornell-owned computer. However, there are even more hoops for user to get a Cornell-funded license. Such as having to provide an account number to the CU Software Team, even thought it does not get charged.

Firefox, ESR only.  

User can do. Or, they can install the non-ESR version. More on ESR:

 FYI: Chemistry IT-supported systems have other characteristics which are not available to self-supported systems:

  • A user-level (non-Admin) day-to-day user account.
  • Configured user-level accounts for optimal use, including mail and calendaring.
  • Creation of accounts automatically based on Cornell's Active Directory service, thus enabling single-sign-on (SSO) using Cornell's NetID credentials.
    • In Windows, this enable automatic passing of log-on credentials to networked services, such as most group file shares.
  • An admin account for Chemistry IT's use.
  • Anti-virus monitoring and updates.
  • Broad range of OS and application updates managed by Chemistry IT.
  • Upcoming, required encryption and associated key escrow services.
