The amount of data to move informs how long copying will take.

• What is the size of the data (documents, etc.) Will has on his Mac server which must be moved to his <wrd33> directory on the CIT file server? A: 49GB (iMac) and 62GB (MacBook)
  • Is DropBox.com data being sync'd to the Mac server? NO
  • Is email data being sync'd to the Mac server? NO

• What is the size of the data on Will's iMac? (See table, below)
• What is the size of the data on Will's laptop? (See table, below)

Answers:

Are there a large number, or unusual, applications on the iMac or laptop? (These would need to be reinstalled with a clean OS.)

  • ChemDraw (standard is fine)
  • Adobe suite, if current version OK. Discuss with Will if Adobe Suite "needs" an upgrade

• Are there any you'd prefer ChemIT not re-install?
  • Don't install new version of EndNote or iWork. (Will has media and can install if we don't.)

What email client is Will using? A: Outlook

What are Will's default account privileges? A: User. Has an Admin account for updates, installs, etc.

To do's

FIRST: Transition Will's work docs from Mac server to CIT file server

Step 1: Move Will's data on Mac file server to CIT file server

• Will's iMac is connecting fine to the CIT file server.
• Confirm Will's MacBook connects fine to the CIT file server.
• Q: Keep server so iMac can log in properly?
  • Is this necessary if one turns off home directory services on iMac? Turns it off on MacBook?

Step 2: Upgrade laptop

Carry laptop to ChemtIT's office.

• In ChemIT's office, upgrade laptop with clean (and current) OS, 10.8. (Q: Version of current OS on laptop?)
  • A "clean slate" removes any connection to Mac server.
  • Re-enable access to CIT file server and ChronoSync.
  • Enable's NetID/p/w access to iMac.

A this point, only the iMac has access to Will's documents on the Mac server. Will's laptop will not have this access; it only has access to the CIT file server.

Step 3: Upgrade iMac and move Mac file server out of Will's office

Move iMac to ChemIT's office.

1. Enable the laptop to access Will's directory on the CIT file server.
