University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Maria Heijne, Library Director (4-year term ending December 2021)

Maria Heijne is Library Director of the University of Amsterdam. Since 1976, her interests have been on the technological and innovative developments in libraries, and she has focused on the development of Open Access in every way possible. In the early 90s she joined the academic networking community at SURFnet to establish a role for libraries within the networking community and became familiar with the groundbreaking role of arXiv already in that period. From 2001, as Library Director at Delft University of Technology Library, she concentrated on adapting the library to the change in the information environment. This resulted in a Library Learning Center and in 2009 a Centre for Research Data Management (3TU Datacentre). In 2002, as one of the founders of the Dutch DARE project, aimed to establish a Dutch Academic Repository network, she was already confronted with issues like interoperability and implementation of standards. She is currently working on national issues including interfacing the Current Research information System, to provide an optimal environment for Dutch researchers to publish their pre- and postprints (preferably in combination with their data), and membership in the national team to renegotiate with Elsevier. Maria is also a steering group member of the LERU CIO community and member of Universitas 21; she is past President of the cooperative network of Dutch University Libraries and past President of IATUL (International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries).
