Engineering disciplines are vital to building new capabilities needed by the scientific community. Within walking distance of the Cornell College of Engineering, CHESS benefits enormously by providing students in MEng programs with "professional “professional design project" project” experiences. Year-long projects provide ample time for students to design, build, test and commission substantial new equipment or operational projects. Two recent examples include a student, who designed and built the crystal bender for the Laue X-ray monochromator optic that will be a key component in upgrading the F2 end station for high-energy sciences, and another student, who analyzed and designed a new cartridge-style primary beamline "beamstop" “beamstop” that is smaller, easily replaced, and capable of handling the heat loading from undulator sources being considered for hard-bend beamlines. Both students worked closely with engineering and science teams and gave periodic review presentations and final written reports.
