Position: Full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Food Science Location: Department of Food Science, 745 Agriculture Mall Drive, Nelson Hall of Food Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907-2009 Appointment and Salary: Assistant Professor (9-month academic year appointment plus two months of summer pay due to Extension responsibilities). Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. A background check will be required for employment in this position. Qualifications: Ph. D. in food science, food microbiology, microbiology, food engineering, or related field required. Candidates will be strongly considered who have research interests associated with food-related microorganisms (probiotics, viruses, fermentation, spoilage, and current and emerging foodborne pathogens). Applicants should have excellent communication skills and ability to work in teams and solve problems, and have demonstrated skills in electronic technologies and ability to work in collaborative environments for effective interchanges with clients, regulatory agencies, and media. Preference for candidates with knowledge and experience in microbiological, chemical and/or toxicological aspects of food safety.
Responsibilities: Position is described as 60% Extension and 40% research. The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized program, and will participate in and/or lead Extension and research teams in integrated multidisciplinary projects among campus-wide collaborators. Extension responsibilities will include development of training programs and workshops with supporting educational materials for FDA, USDA or state regulated food producers, processors and Extension field staff. Research program is expected to complement and support Extension programming to target audiences. Research may address basic and/or applied issues relative to food safety topics at any point from pre-harvest to post-harvest food system. The successful candidate will be expected to secure external Extension and research funds, to advise graduate and undergraduate research students, contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and/or graduate level courses, and to engage in national and international activities. Multidisciplinary collaborative opportunities in food safety exist with Purdue faculty in various departments on campus: Agronomy, Animal Sciences, Nutrition, Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Biological Sciences, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Botany and Plant Pathology, and Veterinary Medicine. Numerous centers also are available for collaboration: NIH Botanicals Center, Whistler Center for Carbohydrate Research, and the Center for Food Safety Engineering.
