Book Repair

Overcasting a new cloth joint on a circulating book.Image Modified Book repair in the Cornell Conservation Unit is responsible for the preservation and conservation of circulating materials in Cornell University Library collections.  We provide the following care to materials that have been damaged through circulation:

  • Evaluate damaged materials to offer to the Division of Rare and Manuscripts Collections in appropriate collecting areas
  • Transfer books with brittle paper to the Brittle Books Program for reformatting or replacement
  • Transfer books that cannot be treated in the lab due to split bindings, broken sewing or missing covers to the Commercial Binding Department

  • Build marginal material cases for items that cannot be repaired or commercially bound
