Use-cases in Chemistry
Some (mostly non-NMR ones) are listed within our Sponsored NetID inventory page:
Specific examples:
- NMR has about 3 users who have GuestIDs, not NetIDs, and need SSH access to their results.
- Freed group's access from Israel to their 93GHz computer, via one GuestID.
- Chemistry IT, for the Stockroom POS's support, has one for Brightworks.
For Chemistry IT staff
IMPORTANT: After creating a GuestID, you MUST add the user to the departmental VPN group or they won't be able to use that VPN service! Here's the info on that group:

For connecting, once you have the software properly installed, be sure you are following the directions specific to "departmental VPN", not just Cornell's top-level VPN. For example, here are instructions for connecting from Windows:

(1) As you know, your GuestID is: <gid-your-GuestID-name>
Use the password you set up for this GuestID when you activated it.
(2) Our departmental VPN is: AS-CHM-DeptVPN
Thus, for VPN access, the full name you will use is:
gid-your-GuestID-name@AS-CHM-DeptVPN
