| The National Science Foundation-funded Cornell University Grass Roots GK-12 Program’s main focus is to advance education in renewable energy and alternative energy-related issues. Graduate student Fellows from Cornell will share their research on a STEM theme of renewable energy (solar, biomass, fuel cells, batteries, and carbon capture strategies) with K-12 teachers during summer 2012 and with the teacher’s students during the school’s academic year 2012-13. During the summer, teachers will be exposed to the latest energy research, with hands-on experience in the labs while working alongside the fellows on an original research project, experiencing the process of science first-hand. In addition, the Fellows and K-12 teachers will work together to develop teaching modules for teaching science (typically chemistry, physics, and/or engineering) to their students during the academic year in their respective courses. Through this collaboration the modules will fit with the teacher’s curriculum, with the new science standards being developed by NYS that increases the focus on the process of science and catch student’s interest through the focus on energy issues. The Fellows will spend time working with the teachers in the classroom, implementing these modules. |
