titleCornell University Library Instruction Mission Statement
borderStylesolid

The library's instruction mission is to enhance learning and integrate information competency into the curriculum. Library staff partner with faculty and other instructors to help all members of the academic community to find their way into collections, and to master research techniques and methods. In a rapidly changing information and education environment, we help them learn the skills needed to find, read, evaluate, and use complex resources from the Cornell University Library and beyond, in a confident, efficient, and ethical fashion.

Charge

The Critical Literacies and Pedagogies Team (formerly, the Instruction Team) provides leadership for library-wide instruction initiatives, and supports CUL in its commitment to effective instruction and comprehensive information and related literacies (data literacy, visual literacy, media literacy, primary source literacy), by serving as a clearinghouse for information, facilitating a community of practice, and partnering with other groups on initiatives and projects of shared import.

Information Literacy Assessment Expo

On May 29, 2014, the PSEC Instruction Team sponsored the Cornell University Library Information Literacy Assessment Expo. Almost sixty librarians from six institutions gathered at Cornell to talk assessment all day. Trudi Jacobson, Head of the Information Literacy Department at the University at Albany Libraries, spoke about assessment and the ACRL Draft Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, and nine other librarians gave presentations on information literacy assessment.

Current Issues in Instruction is a regular discussion group on topics pertaining to instruction, instructional technology and student learning both at CUL and elsewhere. Topic and readings for each date will be announced in advance and the discussion will focus on that particular reading topic. While we have a short list of possibilities, we welcome suggestions for topics and readings that address current issues (articles, reports, book chapters, blog postings, e-mail discussion threads, anything really). Send your suggestions to the programming coordinators.
