The IMLS Shareable Local Authorities project partners held their initial conference calls between May and July, 2016.
The group has been working on an inventory of current and recent work in the area, such as the Western Name Authority File Project (also awarded an IMLS grant), a community discussion on organization identifiers initiated by Project THOR, an OCLC report on the representation of organizations in ISNI, and a PCC task group on identity management, and a number of projects tackling name entity extraction, among many others.
The project group is now dividing into working groups focussing on specific aspects of shareable authorities: workflow, data models, institutional support, and technology. The working groups will undertake more detailed preparation for the forum, including doing further work on use cases and articulating the key issues they raise. Crucially, they will also identify additional stakeholders and look to open up channels of communication with them.
We have already welcomed a number of additional participants to the project, including representatives from the National Library of Medicine and the Getty Research Institute, and members of the VIVO community.
The date of the forum has been set for October 24-25, 2016. It will be held at the Mann Library, Cornell University, in Ithaca NY. We will be soliciting additional attendees for this meeting.
We welcome inquiries. Please contact Chew Chiat Naun (cnc53 [at] cornell.edu) or Jason Kovari (jak473 [at] cornell.edu).
