ChemIT is to set up, secure, network, and support a computer for Petr with the following capabilities:
- The computer is capable of running will run basic office and browser software as well as Petr's scientific, design, and programming environments.
- Petr can install software using a special Administrator account.
- The computer can be accessed remotely (via RDP) from Petr's private network or anywhere else from campus. With VPN, it will also be similarly accessible from off-campus.
- There will be no valuable, unique data on the computer since the computer will not be backed up. A file share will be used instead.
To ensure stability and protect other devices on the network, the computer will have the following characteristic:
- Single-boot operation (not dual-boot), running Windows 7 (or 8.1, if desired).
- The computer will not be running any virtual machines.
- The computer will have only one Network Interface Card (NIC).
- The computer will only have accounts provisioned by ChemIT.
- Day-to-day use of the computer will be using a user account (not any form of Administrator account)
- The computer will not host file sharing or printer server services.
- The computer will be based on ChemIT's MS Windows image, and includes current versions of MS Office and Adobe software. The system and application software will be periodically updated, often automatically.
Any needs not met with the above characteristics will be discussed with ChemIT to ensure the computer remains secure, connected to its network, and supportable by ChemIT.
