People's Republic of China National Pavilion

"Cloud"

Artist : Cai Zhisong

Curator : Peng Feng

New up and coming artist Cai Zhisong is among four other artists representing the People's Republic of China.  The others include Pan Gongkai, Liang Yuanwei (the only woman artist representing China), Yang Maoyuan, and Yuan Gong, according to artinfo.com.  Each will have his or her own theme, following a central theme offered by curator Peng displaying China's "national scents."  The traditional scents offered are tea, lotus, liquor, incense, and herbal medicine.  Although there has been some controversy over this due to its very traditional nature, those Peng and others involved in the pavilion argue these traditions are still very much alive in contemporary China; hence, they are still very relevant to contemporary Chinese art.

Zhisong's exibition named "Cloud" is a specific exibition which has caught the attention of many.  It will be positioned in the entrance of the Chinese Pavilion, floating at different heights depending on "temperature, sunshine, and other weather variations (cafa.com)."

"Cloud" will follow the theme of scents of Japan by emitting a scent of tea when "rocked by wind (bejingtoday.com)," and will produce the feelings of emptiness and zen.  This sense of relaxation fits perfectly with the Chinese traditional way of life.  Therefore, it relates directly to the way the Chinese art market is perceived, and displays the traditional feeling of contemporary Chinese art.  People are supposed to walk casually through the clouds to get the tranquil feeling of traditional China, while still appreciating the new age art tactics involved in its creation.  His contemporary style mixed with traditional values are what makes Zhisong's works so important to the Chinese Pavilion.
