What Are EBooks?

EBooks are books/texts published in a digital format. Many patrons prefer eBooks because they are easily accessed and can be interacted with through tools such as copy/pasting, citation managers, text to speech, and more. A common patron question is whether an item is available as an eBook instead of or in addition to the print copy. See the research guide linked above for help locating eBooks in the library catalog.

OverDrive:

Formerly known as Libby, Overdrive is a database that allows patrons to digitally borrow eBooks and audiobooks from Cornell's collections. Our Overdrive collection is always growing and regularly contains the newest popular releases. For more information on Overdrive see this page: Ebooks and Audiobooks

eBook Limitations

Many eBooks have limitations placed on how much content can be downloaded or copy/pasted, and some may limit the number of people able to access them at one time.

If a patron is having trouble accessing an eBook it could be due to limitations on simultaneous users.

EBooks are also limited in how they can be lent/shared. An eBook cannot be sent library-to-library and cannot be requested via BorrowDirect or Interlibrary Loan. Please see note in text box below.

Requesting eBooks for the Library

Since many patrons have a preference for eBooks, especially when working off-campus, we encourage patrons to submit Recommend a Purchase requests for them. Please note that these are requests and can/will not always be fulfilled. If a patron specifically desires the eBook, please inform them to include this preference on the form. Recommend a Purchase

Lending eBooks

EBooks are subject to Controlled Digital Lending. See this entry for more information.
