Background: Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Brunei (antigenic formula 8,20:y:1,5) is a serovar of the O:8 (C2-C3) serogroup. This is a rare serovar in America and Europe; however, it appears to be more common in Asia. For example 2% of the Salmonella serovars isolated from birds in India were reported as S. Brunei. A recent border rejection of dried coconut from Indonesia reported this serovar.

Animal reservoir: birds and chickens

Geographical distribution: Reports of S. Brunei in India, Algeria and Indonesia, indicate that this serovar appears to be distributed in Asia and Africa.

Outbreaks: No outbreaks have been associated with S. Brunei, but reports of human infections were conducted in Algeria.
